Behavior Analysis
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an applied science that seeks to improve the quality of life of the individuals served by teaching or improving language skills, daily living skills, job performance, and other desirable behaviors while decreasing the occurrence of behaviors that are potentially dangerous, illegal, or prevent the individual from participating in activities of their choice. ABA is supported by an extensive line of research conducted over many years to treat addictions, teach parenting skills, improve job performance, and much more. ABA is also an integral part of any treatment package for children with autism spectrum disorder.
At PHCS we are dedicated to providing the safest and most effective behavioral treatment to every student who attends our school. Our behavior analysts are certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and staff receives oversight and ongoing training by a BCBA or a BCaBA. Teachers, assistants, and other staff members who interact with the students are trained in an APD approved crisis management curriculum that teaches strategies for the prevention and de-escalation of crisis situations as well as how to safely intervene in a behavioral crisis.
Students who engage in challenging behaviors or have skill deficits that prevent them from being successful in the classroom may be referred to a member of the behavior team for evaluation. This evaluation may include a functional behavior assessment, data collection, and skill assessments. Following these assessments, if necessary an individualized behavior plan will be written and staff members who work with the student will be trained to implement this plan. Data on student behavior will be collected by staff members and monitored by a behavior analyst.
